Busy bees at Jefferson!

Tuesday, November 7th, 2017

These last few months at Jefferson Elementary have been exciting!! If you have driven past Jeffersons playground recently you might have noticed a slight change. Our playground underwent a transformation at the end of September as new lines were painted for hopscotch and 4 square, and new gravel was put down under the equipment! We also had some of our amazing families donate some soccer balls for the students to use during recess!20171107_104006

Mrs. Dickey’s kindergarten class went on a field trip to Decks Apple orchard on September 15th. While they were there the class learned all about the different types of apples they have there. They also learned how to clean apples, how to make apple juice, and got the opportunity to pick many types of apples!! IMG-6305 IMG-6307 IMG-6315 IMG-6316

Spring Activities at Jefferson!

Tuesday, April 19th, 2016

This Spring Jefferson students were able to attend an assembly called Kids on the Block courtesy of the Nebraska Elks.  The assembly talked about using your manners, including everyone, bullying and many other topics that students are faced with each day.  The puppets held the students attention and there were lots of laughs and giggles in the audience.

Jefferson PTO and Title held there annual book walk and Bingo night.  Each student that attended was able to go home with a brand new book and was able to win several fun prizes during Bingo.  It was a great night to spend time with Jefferson families outside of school.

Third quarter Accelerated Reader winners were able to spend two weeks during plus time working with the robots!  Mrs. Johnson taught them how to race the robots, shovel snow, code and they even named the robots!  The top readers were able to show off their robot skills in front of all the students at an assembly.  Both staff and students were impressed by all that they could do and look forward to working with the robots in the future.  pic3

Jefferson 4th Grade goes to Lincoln!

Monday, April 4th, 2016

olmer3Mrs. Priebe’s and Mrs. Olmer’s 4th grade classes went on a field trip to Lincoln, NE.  The students rode down on the Panther bus and arrived at Memorial Stadium on a beautiful Spring day.  They were given the a tour of Memorial Stadium where they were shown the athletes living quarters, weight rooms, whirlpool rooms and emergency room areas where athletes are taken on site in case of an emergency.  They also saw several different uniforms the UNL football players have worn over the years and were able to look at the Heisman room where the past winners are on display with their trophy.  One of the most memorable moments the students had was getting to run down the red carpet and onto the field at the stadium.  The 4th graders were in awe and loved posing of several pictures.  After the stadium the 4th graders headed to the capital where they enjoyed a nutritional sack lunch provided by the Agricultural group.  The Ag students from UNL gave a presentation to the students telling them where each of the food items they were eating came from and did a Q & A on ag related issues.  Next they headed over to the main floor of the capital where they met with Senator Scheer and were able to ask him questions and then had free time to walk the capital.  They also had a tour guide to lead them and talk about the architecture and paintings of the capital and tell them several interesting facts about Nebraska.  Last but not least they were able to sit in on the senate in session and were introduced as a class to all the senate.  It was a wonderful experience for the 4th graders to get out of the classroom and see some of the things they have been learning about Nebraska all year.  They all had a great time!

The wind and rain didn’t stop the Jefferson kindergartners from having some fun before Spring Break.  They had an egg hunt and did several other spring crafts throughout the week.  The students were so excited to find the treats inside their eggs.  The smiles on their faces says it all.

Dr. Hatfield came to visit the kindergartner’s at Jefferson Elementary. She taught them how to brush and floss their teeth. One of the students favorite things that Dr. Hatfield showed them was all the different tools she used at her dental office. Dr. Hatfield also showed us how much sugar is in certain drinks and each child received a small dental pack and a mask!  What a fun learning experience for Mrs. Jochum and Mrs. Dickeys class.

The Leader in Me Award!

Tuesday, February 9th, 2016

leader pic 2The leader in me award is an award given to a deserving student each month from each class at Jefferson Elementary.  The classroom teacher chooses a student that goes above and beyond expectations to be a great leader and role model for the school.  During plus time a group of students worked with the school counselor to create a list of qualities a leader should possess.  Some characteristics the students came up with were: follows directions, respectful to adults and others, turns in homework on time, has a positive attitude, doesn’t talk when the teacher is talking, is a good listener, dependable, shows teamwork, honest, ignores distractions, stands up for what is right, has a good work ethic, works quietly, is kind to others, organized, sets goals, helps others and is patient.  The leader in me award is a great addition to Jefferson’s student of the month program, we have lots of great leaders at Jefferson!  Pictured above are the first group of leader in me award recipients.

Science Day at Jefferson Elementary!!!

Jefferson Elementary celebrated the end of the year with their annual science day.   This year Edgerton Explorit Center was our presenter.  It started off with a whole school assembly full of fun science experiments such as launching rockets in the air, balancing and throwing a ball to learn about gravity, learning how strong an astronaut needs to be in space…which is much stronger than you would think!  Each grade was also able to attend a special session to learn about things such as bubbles and electromagnetic shock giving each student an opportunity to really get their “hands on science”.  Throughout the day each class was able to go through over 25 individual hands on displays letting them learn about science through play.  They were able to see black light, use a vacuum to hold balls in the air, make noise with a old pot with water, build towers and play drums were just to name a few!  In addition to all the group sessions provided the teachers all did fun science experiments throughout the day in their classrooms.  Some examples were making gak, baking bread & butter, homemade ice-cream, crystal snowflakes and work with magnets and electricity.  It was a day full of hands on learning for both students and teachers and many memories were made!

Hour of Code has arrived at Jefferson!!!

Wednesday, December 16th, 2015

The Hour of Code kicked off last week around the world, where kids across the globe were busy coding.   Jefferson Elementary held an assembly with several special guests to surprise the students with a $10,ooo check awarded to the school.  The check was presented by Mayor Sue Fuchtman to principal Angie Hausmann and is to be used on technology.  The Hour of Code picks one school in each state and Jefferson was chosen to receive this grant.  So far ten osmos and 6 dash and dot robots have been purchased for the school and students are patiently awaiting to try these tools out.  Thanks to the Connie Fund Jefferson has been able to go 1:1 with technology this year which is allowing them to spend a whole week doing an hour of coding each day before break.  During the assembly a few third grade students were able to show everyone how they had programmed drones they had been working on.  The students were in awe watching the drones move around and flip in the gym.  The school is excited to see where all this technology will lead and looks forward to using the osmos and robots soon. Meanwhile they are enjoying coding Star Wars, Minecraft, Frozen and tallying up their lines of coding.
