Lincoln Students Helping Haiti

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Lincoln Elementary students are helping Haiti.  Three (3) classes have been to the Orphan Grain Train to help pack “Kids Against Hunger” food packs.  The total number of children fed by our classes is over 5,000.    Lincoln Elementary has always celebrated with a week’s worth of activities during the week of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.  This year in addition to packing food, the entire school accepted a challenge to earn money to be sent to Haiti.  It is 1287 miles from Norfolk, Nebraska to Port Au Prince, Haiti.  A penny was donated for each book read and successfully tested through the Accelerated Reading program.  Progress on reaching the goal was shared through announcements, a goal thermometer, but mostly through the taping of pennies to a map showing the route from Norfolk to Port Au Prince.  Besides donating the $12.87, the top 3 or 4 readers from each class will get to go and pack “Kids Against Hunger” food packs.  We have all learned how much fun it is to help others!

Lincoln Students Decorate Trees for the Veterans

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Years ago a former Lincoln Elementary teacher began a school tradition during the holiday season. Lincoln students are given the opportunity to decorate a “family” tree.  The trees are displayed at the school for awhile and then are taken to the Norfolk Veterans home to be put on display for the Vets to enjoy along with their family and friends during the holiday season.  The students really look forward to and enjoy this activity.  We had approximately 75 students participate in this holiday activity.Christmas Trees

Lincoln Students Meet the Challenge

Lincoln Students Meet the Challenge

Lincoln students have met the challenge of putting feathers on our turkeys.  Two turkeys were put up in the halls of Lincoln School. For every book the students read, a feather was added.  287 books have been read in the last 15 days. The challenge ends Nov. 22 and will be celebrated by having the mayor and former Lincoln teachers join us to read one final book.
