Lincoln Students Helping Haiti

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Lincoln Elementary students are helping Haiti.  Three (3) classes have been to the Orphan Grain Train to help pack “Kids Against Hunger” food packs.  The total number of children fed by our classes is over 5,000.    Lincoln Elementary has always celebrated with a week’s worth of activities during the week of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.  This year in addition to packing food, the entire school accepted a challenge to earn money to be sent to Haiti.  It is 1287 miles from Norfolk, Nebraska to Port Au Prince, Haiti.  A penny was donated for each book read and successfully tested through the Accelerated Reading program.  Progress on reaching the goal was shared through announcements, a goal thermometer, but mostly through the taping of pennies to a map showing the route from Norfolk to Port Au Prince.  Besides donating the $12.87, the top 3 or 4 readers from each class will get to go and pack “Kids Against Hunger” food packs.  We have all learned how much fun it is to help others!
