Westside Students On the Move

Wednesday, May 17th, 2017

Westside students in First through Fourth grade have been “on the move” this quarter in music class. They have learned several dances from around the world, including the United States, Russia, Ireland, and Sweden. In addition to counting music beats, these dances focus on motor movements such as galloping, skipping, walking, hopping, and elbow swings.

Students in Kindergarten learned several movement games, which introduce the concepts of shared space and scattered formation. At this age level, students are taught how to use up the entire space available, instead of congregating, as if attracted by magnets. This concept takes time to internalize and will become easier as the child matures.

Some of the dances learned are called “partner dances”. These dances require the students to pair up with one person for the entirety of the song. Other dances are called “mixers”. Students will have more than one partner, during the course of the dance.

Lastly, students of all grade levels played new movement games/dances that allowed boys and girls the choice to partner up or dance alone, while still part of the group. In one particular game, students are supposed to “be a statue”. The first time the music plays, students create one pose. The second time, the student needs to be two different statues. The third time, three and so on. This proved to be a challenge for many students, since they had to come up with seven altogether! Many students chose to use the latest popular move called the “dab”, which usually caused an eruption of healthy laughter. Always a welcome sound!

We LOVE Technology!!

Thursday, May 11th, 2017

Third graders at Westside created a Google slideshow about a place they would like to visit. In addition to practicing their skills with Google slides, they also learned more about how to follow copyright requirements. Students practiced finding copyright information for images to learn if they had permission to use them. Let’s keep learning those 21-century skills!

IMG_0731The third graders each have a Chromebook to use at school. To practice typing using our Chromebooks, we have been typing our sentences for our vocabulary words each week in reading. It is fun to see that we can use technology even in classes like reading, and it is a lot more fun than writing them paper and pencil! We love using our Chromebooks in our classroom!

Third Grade Authors

Friday, March 24th, 2017

IMG_0215In third grade we have been busy at work taking an animal report through the writing process. Students worked to research an animal using a book and an online source. Next they drafted their report informing about the animal’s diet, habitat, and characteristics. Students edited, revised, and published their report. Their reports will be published into a class book through a company called School Mate Publishing. This will allow students to purchase a hard cover book written and illustrated by themselves.

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! What a fun day we had in first grade. We listened to stories, made Cat In The Hat hats, ate Dr. Seuss cookies, did word searches and watched a video, our favorite, “Green Eggs and Ham”. We wish it was his birthday everyday!!

IMG_9725This week in Mrs. Tipton’s Kindergarten classroom we celebrated Valentine’s Day on Tuesday. We celebrated this holiday by incorporating hearts and love into many of our daily activities that day and throughout the rest of the week. We read many read aloud stories all about love and Valentine’s. We also spent our writing time writing about who we love and why we love them. In math, we got to use candy hearts to practice and learn how to sort and graph. Here is a sneak peak into our day full of hearts, candy and love.

Mrs. Schold’s group recently celebrated their 100th day of school. That means these kiddos are 100 (plus a few) days smarter! It is amazing what 100 days of learning can do. These children are reading books, writing two or more sentences, and even doing math facts! This group is working hard to prepare for first grade.

LIFE at Westside

Tuesday, February 14th, 2017

In our Elementary LIFE program, we work on many essential skills for independence that range from functional academics to self care. Typically we build opportunities to practice these skills into the natural occurring events of our school day. Sometimes, though, we just need to have a break and do something that seems like it is just for fun. Here our students can be seen working on core muscle strength, balance and stability, and hand strength while enjoying every minute of it.
