Let’s Get Moving!

Wednesday, February 14th, 2018

With temperatures and/or wind chills below 10 degrees, we have not been able to go outside for recess in a couple of weeks. Students in Mrs. Schold’s kindergarten class have still found ways to get up and moving. Thanks to GoNoodle, we can dance, stretch, lunge, and squat away our extra energy!

We are also able to practice different skills like clapping out syllables and reading with expression.

Imagine Learning

Tuesday, January 30th, 2018

Reading, writing, listening, and speaking are all skills that kindergarteners are studying. They practice these daily with a computer program, Imagine Learning. The program is individualized, allowing each student to move at his or her own pace.

Students are especially excited when practicing speaking. The program allows them to record themselves reading passages and speaking in conversations. Students enjoy listening to themselves and making necessary improvements the next time.

Happy New Year from Mrs. Tipton’s class to you!

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018

In my third year of teaching Kindergarten, it still amazes me how much Kindergarten students can grow and change within one school year together. This past semester was spent learning and working very hard on many new skills. As we move into this next semester, we spent time discussing skills that they learned last semester and what they are looking forward to in the coming year. I am looking forward to watching my students fill the pages of their 2018 books throughout the rest of this semester. I know that they will continue to set high goals and reach them with hard work and dedication. Happy New Year from Mrs. Tipton’s class to you!

Fun & Fragrant Holidays

Wednesday, December 6th, 2017

The second graders in Mrs. Prokopec’s class worked as a team to make some fun and fragrant holiday ornaments. The students read the recipe, followed directions, measured string that was used to hang the ornament, and also had to know about fractions.

The children had fun practicing their math skills and working with each other on this project.

Say No to Drugs, and Say YES to….

Wednesday, October 4th, 2017

The First Grade students at Westside Elementary celebrated Red Ribbon Week this week. Students kicked off the week by pledging to be Drug Free. To end the week, a speaker from the Madison County Extension Office came and presented a program called, “Health Rocks”. This was a hands-on presentation about the harmful effects of smoking. During the week, the first graders did a writing activity called: Say No to Drugs, Say YES to… Here are some of their amazing responses: I Say YES to broccoli, I Say YES to reading books, I Say YES to being kind, I Say YES to exercise, and I Say YES to drinking V8 juice. What a smart group of first graders!

First Graders are so excited to begin Accelerated Reading, AR. Each student took their STAR Reading test to know their reading level and are so engaged in reading books all by themselves. They love taking AR Test on the computer or on their Ipads all by themsleves.
Happy Reading in First Grade!IMG_2415

Exploring Envisions

Friday, September 15th, 2017

Hello from Mrs. Heying’s 4th Grade Classroom!
We have been working so hard this year in all subject areas but especially when it comes to Math. Our new Math program, Envisions, has been keeping us on our toes this year, preparing us for our big step into Middle School. So far, we have covered Place Value, Rounding, Expanded Form, Addition, Subtraction, and several new ways of thinking and solving multi-stepped problems.
What’s so great about the Envisions program is the daily use of our chromebooks. Every lesson lets us explore different videos, games, and questions that can be answered in many different ways. We are learning that there is always more than one way to solve a problem and this program allows us to answer questions in ways that our brains think. It’s awesome! Is it hard? Yes! But, we love a challenge.
The manipulatives and charts give us helpful visuals when we need them and the centers that are offered are just another fun way to extend our knowledge on each topic. We have a hard road ahead but we are excited about Math and what this new program has to offer and teach us!
